The use of avocados as a moisturiser or hair treatment can be traced right back to Ancient Egypt – long before hipsters were invented. The little green fruits can definitely make your hair look shinier and feel silkier and there’s actually a lot of science behind it.
Avocado oil is very high in monounsaturated fatty acids which help to moisturise and rejuvenate the scalp so if you suffer from dandruff or dry skin it will combat that. The oil can penetrate the hair cuticle so it will deeply moisturise and nourish your hair. You can pick up some avocado oil at your local health food shop and mix this with your regular shampoo as an easy way to work it into your routine and it’s a little bit easier than mashing up lots of whole ones.
Avocados also contain a lot of vitamin E which is good for promoting healthy hair growth as it helps to build tissue and repair any damage to the hair follicles. As vitamin E is an antioxidant it will also help to take down any inflammation which again will fight against a flaky or itchy scalp.
Biotin (vitamin B) improves your body’s keratin infrastructure which is what your hair is made of and avocados are packed with this stuff. Biotin protects our cells from damage and if we’re low in it then our hair can become really dry and brittle, super gross! This will also help your skin and nails too so it’s even more of a reason to pack an avo for lunch.
So the answer is yes – avocados are good for your hair as well as looking super cool on your Instagram feed 🙂 So stock up, mash them up and spread them on your toast and your head for the dreamiest locks ever…
